Mindfulness

It is hot. Though it is only early July, we are in the midst of an exhausting heat wave that can easily lead to a state of lassitude and longing for cooler temperatures. I have to remind myself that being indoors is not such a bad thing, though I would much rather be outside enjoying summer’s long, sweet hours, whether walking, working, or lying in a hammock. I must be open to the possibilities of every moment so as not to waste a single one. I will strive to be mindful.

Being mindful is not as easy as it sounds. To do so, we must be present in each moment, aware, curious, and open to the possibilities each moment presents. Seeking it means that instead of giving in to the doldrums of summer heat by flopping in a chair and flipping through TV channels, I’ll instead welcome a time of heat-induced respite, perhaps by making a list of small tasks I’ve been putting off, reading an interesting article, or indulging in a cold glass of tea and reminiscing about the joys of winter! Whatever I choose I will be present and appreciative and engaged in my thoughts, mindful of this gift of a summer day–and all its possibilities.
